Taste and See
Is there anything as delightful as biting into a crisp, sweet, juicy apple hand-picked from an orchard? How about this: using those fresh apples to make a homemade pie or bread or muffins. Mmmmm. In this autumnal season there are so many delightful ways to taste and see the Lord is good.
I wonder, what are you tasting and seeing this season that reveals the goodness of God? Is it harvest vegetables or orchard fruits or slow-cooked comfort foods? Is it chilly, fresh air filling up your lungs and bring renewed energy to your body? Or has your soul come to life from the colorful leaves and spirited lawn decorations peppering our landscape?
Though this season is filled with delightful smells and sights that remind us of the goodness of God’s creation, there are also difficulties: the temperature is getting uncomfortably cold, the daylight is waning, the sky is frequently gray, and our social and political lives are teeming with anxiety as we approach election day amidst the global pandemic. When we struggle with the hard stuff this season, let us take to heart the words of the psalmist: happy are those who take refuge in God.
Whoever we are, whatever our circumstances, we are beloved children of a God who offers us refuge, always. And when we take refuge in God, we are not alone, but are joined by the saints who have come before us, the saints living among us, and saints we have yet to know.
